When Daniel’s mouth found Rachel’s he felt her lips tremble, then soften and shape themselves to his as if she’d been doing it all her life. A feeling of rightness flooded him as her arms circled his neck.

When the kiss ended, neither of them spoke for the longest time but sat, shoulders touching, smiling at each other. Eventually Rachel laid her head on his shoulder.

“That was nice,” she murmured.

“It was indeed.” A surge of possessiveness washed through him as he at last held his wife in his arms.

They spent the next hour or so feeding each other tidbits of food and talking comfortably, as if they had known each other for years rather than just over a week.

Daniel’s boyhood in the orphanage had been bleak, but it had at least been consistent, with one day very much like the next.

Rachel’s early years sounded dismal as she first lost her mother, then her aunt, and moved from one squalid squat to another. He understood everything she wasn’t saying; behavior she was less than proud of that had been necessary to survive.

“I miss Meg,” she said softly, as the tale wound down. “I like to think she’s in a better place, smiling her approval as she sees you and I together.”

It took Daniel a moment to realize Meg was in actual fact Mary Margaret. Spending this time with Rachel he had forgotten all about the woman he was supposed to have wed. “I’m sure she’s happy with the part she played to bring us together,” he said.

Dusk tinged the landscape to a blur of soft gray tones by the time the boat returned to the dock. Daniel thanked the captain and ushered Rachel down the gangplank once it was in place.

The minute his feet touched the dock he sensed that something was not quite right. He caught a glimpse of furtive movement opposite, saw a shadow detach itself from the warehouse and move in the opposite direction.

Daniel placed a heavy iron key in Rachel’s hand. “Go up to the office quickly and lock the door behind you. Don’t let anyone in other than me.”

“What is it, Daniel? What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know, but I fully intend to find out.”
